Goal of Speech Code
Bridging cultures and impacts how we are able to understand others and coordinate our actions with others.
What is Speech code?
Six Propositions
The Core of Speech Codes
1. Distinctiveness of Speech Codes Every community has their own speech code.
2. Multiplicity of Speech Codes In any given speech community, multiple speech codes are deployed; different ways to speak to your boss, friends, and family.
3. Substance of Speech Codes Involves a culturally distinctive Psychology, Sociology, and Rhetoric.
Psychology: every speech code "thematizes" the nature of individuals in a particular way.
Sociology: represents a “system of answers” for how the self and other individuals are linked together through the use of speech codes determining who talks to who, when, and in what contexts.
Rhetoric: in this context, represents two ideas: discovery of truth and persuasive appeals.
4. Interpretation of Speech Codes Some speech codes view small talk as “just small talk” but other speech codes see small talk as a way to connect.
5. Site of Speech Codes We learn the meanings of phrases and words from native speakers of the speech code, as these meanings are part of the speech code.
6. Force of Speech Codes in Discussions Using shared speech codes allows for predicting, explaining, and controlling the conversation and how the speech codes are used.
